October 1, 2015 SUBJECT: Use of Disinfectant Wipes on da Vinci Surgical System Dear Customer, This letter is to alert you about the impact certain disinfectant wipes may have on your da Vinci Surgical System. Surface disinfectant wipes are routinely used to wipe the exterior surface of the da Vinci System. Per the system user manual, system cleaning can be done with the use of a soft, lint-free cloth and a surface disinfectant product (examples include Envirocide, CaviCide and 70% isopropyl alcohol or a pre-moistened disinfectant wipe product). Intuitive has learned that use of certain chemical disinfectant wipes can damage plastic components of the system instrument arms in the form of cracking. Investigation into the issue has shown that two specific wipes contribute to surface cracking. It is strongly recommended to discontinue use of the following wipes to clean da Vinci Surgical Systems as they have been confirmed to cause cracking on the system surface: • •
CaviWipes1 manufactured by Metrex. Sani-Cloth AF3 wipes manufactured by PDI, Inc.
Observed cracking due to certain chemical cleaners has primarily been cosmetic in nature, however if cracking propagates far enough, it can result in fluid intrusion or damage to electrical components that can result in system errors. It is not expected that such cracking will introduce any additional risk to the use of the da Vinci System. However, if cracking is observed, please contact customer service to initiate a service visit.
